The 'Picasso 1936 Exhibition' ontology was drawn up on the occasion of the documentary show 'Picasso 1936. Traces of an Exhibition' organised by the Museu Picasso in 2011 that upheld the idea of valuing documents in artistic processes. Using technological resources, the show describes how the Picasso exhibition held in Barcelona, Bilbao and Madrid in 1936 was conceived and materialised, and is now a key event for understanding the artist's relationship with Barcelona and, by extension, with Spain.

In information science, ontology is the explicit formalisation of a shared conceptual scheme. In this case, 'Picasso 1936 Exhibition' intends to conceptualise the meaning of the 1936 display of Picasso works and explain the artist's connections with Barcelona and Spain. The ontology, a combination of archive studies, semantic website and data visualisation, has an experimental basis and presents new ways of formalising and structuring information and documents, enabling us to recreate the 1936 event while generating and sharing new knowledge on Picasso.
