Presentation Exhibition Chronicle of the exhibition Artworks of the Collection Catalogue

This show devoted to the erotic gaze in Picasso's oeuvre enables viewers to trace the development of style and content throughout his career, revealing the persistence of this gaze and its different manifestations.

From the time he made the first drawings that expressed his early interest in the female form, to the last drawings made just a few days before his death, distorted, distressing views of the female sex, Picasso's entire career unfolded in the light of Eros and the shadow of Thanatos. At the core of his production, however, we find a set of specifically erotic works, most of them drawings and sketches kept in the intimacy of drawers or in private collections, but also paintings and sculptures.

In one sense, we could say that the whole of Picasso's oeuvre has an erotic quality: creation always stems from the sexual drive. This is precisely the aspect that the exhibition intends to reveal. In chronological order, the show traces the evolution of style and subject matter in Picasso's oeuvre, focusing on the pre-eminence of his erotic gaze, sometimes crudely sexual; the persistence and diversification of what Jean Clair termed the 'libido of seeing'.
