Presentation Exhibition Chronicle of the exhibition Artworks of the Collection Catalogue

This show explains the influence that Barcelona's artistic and cultural atmosphere in the late nineteenth century had on Picasso. The young artist's progressive integration into the French avant-garde resulted from his participation in the coterie of Els Quatre Gats, which thus indisputably appears as a key to modernity.

This show provides an opportunity to discover the relationship between Picasso and Barcelona and to study in depth the close ties he maintained with the city that enabled him to broaden his horizons. The numerous portraits he made of those who frequented the coterie bear witness to these connections, and many of these works are now in the Museu Picasso's permanent collection.

The narrative of this exhibition is based on the influence of the cultural life of the city of Barcelona in the late nineteenth century, and on the painter's gradual approximation to the French avant-garde movements derived from his involvement in the Quatre Gats circle, an undeniable key to modernity. Picasso i Els 4 Gats is also a look back at the artists who made Els Quatre Gats tavern the centre of modernity in Barcelona and contributed to the enhancement of the city's artistic pulse.
