Presentation Exhibition Chronicle of the exhibition Catalogue

Within the museum's exhibition programme dedicated to Picasso and the historical avant-garde, this retrospective show of works by Roger De La Fresnaye (1885-1925) presents the work of an outstanding representative of French Cubism who took part in the 1917 Exposition d'Art Français held in Barcelona.

The show brings together over two hundred works that enable viewers to follow Roger De La Fresnaye's artistic career and value his worth. An important artist in the European movements of the first quarter of the twentieth century, La Fresnaye fell into oblivion in the sixties. His original approach combined avant-garde trends and classical tradition, bringing new and personal ideas to Cubism. The freedom of his works reflected his freedom of spirit, his desire to follow only the dictates of his own intelligence and sensitivity.

The study of Le Fresnaye's work furthers and enhances our knowledge of Cubism and of its links with earlier and later trends. The exhibition pays special attention to drawing, as the artist was an outstanding draughtsman and favoured this medium in the last years of his life.
