Plossu / Picasso. Barcelona / Gósol / Horta de Sant Joan / Cadaqués
2024
The love that Picasso felt for Barcelona extended to the landscapes of Catalonia, and is clearly reflected in this latest project from the Museu Picasso in Barcelona, in which we accompany the French photographer Bernard Plossu on his stays in the places that witnessed the flowering of Pablo Picasso’s creative genius during his sojourns in the Catalan countryside. The images Plossu shot in these locations distil their essence and drink from the influence of Picasso’s painting.
With subtle plays of light, Plossu has created a series of photographs that capture the beauty of the landscapes the young Picasso immersed himself in and spurred his prodigious creativity. The Fresson process, characterised by its rich tonal range and the textures of its finish, adds a captivating depth to these evocative images.
In their exploration of the very same landscapes and villages that once so inspired the Malagan painter, Plossu’s photographs transcend the barrier of time and capture the soul of these special places. The Museu Picasso invites us to immerse ourselves in a fascinating confrontation of the images captured by Plossu and the works in which Picasso depicted the same views. In some cases, historical documents and period photographs are included alongside the paintings and sketches, adding a further rich layer of content.
