Presentation Exhibition Chronicle of the exhibition Catalogue

The exhibition focuses on four of the most significant theatrical collaborations in which Picasso took part as a scene painter, and that no doubt contributed to the modernisation of Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.

Pablo Picasso's artistic experiments weren't limited to the realm of the plastic arts — his great creative talent also led him to formulate innovate proposals for stage sets. Thus, in the years 1916 to 1924, when he played a more active part in stage life, the theatre was moving towards a more modern and innovative concept under the direction of Diaghilev, the choreography of Léonide Massine, and the music of Satie, Stravinsky and Falla.

The exhibition examines four of Picasso's most important theatrical collaborations that modernised Serge Diaghilev's ballet productions, which thereafter abandoned the pompous Orientalist attributes formerly characterising them to fulfil the director's greatest expectations based on the idea that 'Perfect ballet can only be created by the very closest fusion of three elements: dance, painting and music.'
