1917. Picasso in Barcelona
An exhibition that commemorates Picasso's return to Barcelona in 1917, which would be his longest sojourn in the city since he had left to move to Paris in 1904. Besides devoting himself to his art, Picasso spent his free time taking long walks and visiting tourist attractions.
In 1917, Barcelona was a refuge for many avant-garde artists and would become one of Europe's cultural epicentres. Picasso arrived in the city following the footsteps of Diaghilev's Russian Ballets that would be presented at the Liceu opera house, and of Olga Khokhlova, ballerina and his partner at the time. Welcomed, celebrated and extolled during his stay, the Barcelona he re-encountered was brimming with cultural life, very different to the city he had left behind in 1904.
The display of approximately seventy works, including paintings, drawings and personal documents, reveals Picasso's relationship with Barcelona art circles, his sightseeing tours and moments of leisure, not to mention his creative output that was especially fertile at this time, as he continued to explore new plastic resources, oscillating between classicism, Expressionism and Cubism.
